Senior member IEEE, Fellow of the Optical Society of America, the Institute of Physics and the Learned Society for Wales.
Professor K Alan Shore graduated in mathematics from the University of Oxford (1971) and obtained a PhD at University College, Cardiff, Wales, UK (1975). His thesis work concerned the electrical and optical properties of double-heterostructure semiconductor lasers. His subsequent research work has been principally in the area of semiconductor optoelectronic device design and experimental characterisation with particular emphasis on the nonlinear behaviour of laser diodes. He has authored or co-authored over 940 contributions to archival journals, books and technical conferences.
He was a lecturer at the University of Liverpool (1979-1983) and then at the University of Bath where he became Senior Lecturer (1986), Reader (1990) and Professor (1995). In 1995 he was appointed to the Chair of Electronic Engineering, Bangor University. He is the founder and Chair of the Photonics Academy for Wales and a member of the Steering Committee of the Welsh Optoelectronics Forum. He is engaged in the promotion of events to celebrate the declaration by the United Nations of 2015 as the ‘International Year of Light’.
Teaching areas: optical communications, MEMS, optoelectronics.
